Convert dress from a zippered back to a corset back

30 Sep

Recently I had a bridal party ask me to alter the bridesmaid dresses from a zippered back to a corset back. The reason being that many of the dresses were simply too small.

The gap in the back of most of the dresses.

Several of the dresses needed at least three inches let out. Rather than try to do this through the seam allowances I was asked to take out the zipper and make a corset back.

This isn’t the best picture as the dress is only on a hanger, but it gives the general idea. For the corset ties I used leftover fabric from when I hemmed the dresses. Also there is a strip of fabric snapped into the opening (also remnants from the hem).

My first bustle which I later moved the top button about six inches higher to pull the dress higher off the floor

I used a hook and eye to bustle the dress and sewed bridal buttons over the hook and eye for better eye appeal.

The outer layer of chiffon hung long even after I bustled the train, so I had to creatively compensate for this.

On either side seam of the chiffon I hand-stitched a hook and attached the corresponding eye to the hem of the chiffon about a foot closer to the back than the side seam.

As the rule of thumb, I don’t know that there is any correct way to bustle a dress. Use your creativity and work with the bride’s wishes.

Alter wedding dress to high/low hem line

Along the side seam there is a gathered look

Along the side seam there is a gathered look

This dress just needed some basic alterations. The bride wanted to have a gathered look in the side seams around the abdomen so I sewed 6 inch strips of 1/4inch elastic into each side seam, stretching as I sewed causing the effect.

Also the dress originally had a straight hem but I alter it to a high/low hem line.

For this particular dress I put a series of hook and eyes on the inside so the dress bustles under.
